Lesbian Movie Characters in Video Games - Kim from BTC

LostWinds WiiWare title

Every now and again a game comes along and you think "Wow, that looks nice". LostWinds - just released for WiiWare in the US - is one such game. Described as "an enchanting adventure bursting with new gameplay ideas that embrace the innovative controller of the Wii", LostWinds seems to be a surefire hit, if a little short (reportedly around 3 hours).

Older gamers will probably be fairly taken aback when they see the name David Braben attached to this title. LostWinds was developed by Braben's company 'Frontier Developments'. Game geeks may automatically know Braben's name due to a little title called Elite that released way back in 1984 (and it was awesome!).

We haven't played LostWinds yet (we're trying to arrange a review), but our good pal Michael over at BrainyGamer has and he thinks it's pretty darn sweet. LostWinds is out now in the US, other regions TBA.

Dark Age of Camelot MMORPG

We bang on about console games all the time here at the LG, so we thought we'd do something for all those PC gamers out there. Let's take a look at a very cool MMORPG in the form of Dark Age of Camelot. Got your attention with the Camelot thing right? I mean who doesn't love Arthurian legends!

Dark Age of Camelot released back in 2001, but it's kept up to date with loads of new adventures and add-ons ever since. If you're into PvE or PvP gameplay styles and you haven't had a chance to check this out, why not give it a try? We're informed it's heaps of fun and you can get a 14 day free trial at the official website. Now, I'm off to read The Lady of Shallot.

Gay Girls Who Game - Epi Eighteen

Gay Girls Who Game are back with exercise and puzzles galore! This week it's all about getting fit, Wii Fit! There's the usual viewer feedback where the girls answer your queries (or Queeries? - Ed.) and give general feedback, as well as trying to calm that GTA IV debate.

Episode Eighteen of Gay Girls Who Game (thanks to AfterEllen.com and LesbianGamers.com) features reviews of Wii Fit [unsurprisingly] on the Nintendo Wii and Professor Layton and the Curious Village on the Nintendo DS. There's also something about Dungeon's & Dragons and Callisto threesomes!

Without further ado you can catch Episode Eighteen of Gay Girls Who Game HERE.

Microsoft's My Lips and other news

As you may or may not be aware it is Microsoft Gamerday 2008 in San Fransisco and there are a few things coming to light we thought you should know about. Sadly one of them isn't the Microsoft's Lips or My Lips device. The device was said to be unveiled at the event, but didn't appear (because they're keeping it for E3 along with the Xiimote / Newton - assuming they exist).

My Lips is said to be a voice input device for Xbox 360. We've got no idea if it's true, given the Xbox 360 headset is a voice input device. Other things coming out of the event... Gears of War 2 will feature a 'romantic storyline' and no female playables were mentioned. Viva Pinata 2 is due out in November and looks cute (VP is also out soon for DS). Left for Dead (the upcoming zombie title) looks awesome and has a female playable character! Huzzah!

Lesbian Geek site issues

Just to let people know we are aware of the site issues we're having at Lesbian Geek at present. The people at WebCity here in Australia are looking into it as it seems to be an issue at their end of things. We're not sure how long it will take till the site is back to normal, given we've just read a whole heap of people really slating the WebCity service. I guess we'll see how long it takes them to fix the issue won't we.

Sorry for any inconvenience.

Blood Ties the game

Came across this little title and thought you all might be interested. Yes apparently it's Blood Ties the PC game, a little downloadable title. Hopefully you'll have more luck than we did when you download the trial, since we didn't even get to play it before it removed the 60 minute play time in about 12 seconds.

Should someone brave the download and actually get Blood Ties the video game to work, please pop into the comments just what you thought of it... we would be 'eternally' grateful as ole Henry Fitzroy might say. We would have given you a little review of it, but $20 is a little bit much. Good luck with downloading that demo!

A Video Gaming Discourse

As you may or may not be aware, one of our favorite gaming blogs to visit here at Lesbian Gamers is BrainyGamer. Michael runs the site and brings thought provoking ideas and observations to the gaming table every week (as we try to do in a different way). With this in mind we decided to collaborate on a piece about issues of hostility within our hobby.

The full article is linked below. Whilst it addresses some of the issues inherent in the volatile nature of gaming and the games community, the article leaves the door open for meaningful discourse and we hope you'll take the time to leave your comments. Please be aware that for illustrative purpose we have included a couple of less than savory comments we've had here at Lesbian Gamers.

My Lesbian Radio and Lesbian Lounge

The ladies over at The Lesbian Lounge were celebrating a birthday on their last podcast and they had a number of special guests including Sarah Warn from AfterEllen. Sarah spoke candidly about AfterEllen’s beginnings, where it is going and even gave a shout out to us here at LesbianGamers and LesbianGeek (for which we’re eternally grateful!).

The Lesbian Lounge is a show hosted by the rather lively pair of Donna and Denise and is part of MyLesbianRadio. We wanted to highlight the site for those that may not have heard of it (as we hadn’t! For shame!). Head over and take a listen.

Faith from Mirror's Edge - Cool

Seems the developer's over at DICE have decided to fly in the face of game development rules and norms and not only cast a female lead, but also an Asian female lead - right on! Faith is the lead character from upcoming EA title Mirror's Edge - a first person title with a difference - it's based on parkour (l'art du déplacement).

Faith is a courier (runner), she carries sensitive information on foot via the rooftops and skyways, using parkour moves. Faith is the best runner and the storyline sees her in an drenaline-fuelled race to save her sister’s life. We think this looks pretty cool, we're just not sure how well jumping mechanics work in the FPS genre. It's kind of on our 'gaming lore' list of things FPS titles should never do, as it's hard to jump when you can't see your legs - Yes you remember that annoying bridge level on Half Life 2 don't you people!. Still.. female protagonist named Faith out to save her sister... gotta love that.

Some screenshots after the jump!

GTA IV Gay Agenda

A gay and lesbian agenda in GTA IV? Seems some people think so. GTA IV does feature some prominent gay and lesbian storylines and characters, but to suggest there is an agenda by Rockstar to in some way 'promote' homosexuality is ridiculous.

We take a look at one such assertion over at 1Up and come to the conclusion Rockstar may well be pushing an agenda, but not a gay one. You can read the full article we've written to discuss the phenomenon of allegedly pushing a gay agenda in GTA IV at 'GTA IV Pushing a Gay Agenda'. As always your thoughts are welcome.
