Ender’s Game: Homophobia Evolved

Yeah it’s been a hell of a morning and the best I could come up with was a take on the original Halo title.. meh. Let’s get to it shall we. Chair Entertainment has announced Ender’s Game for XBLA, PSN and Windows. The game will utilize Unreal Engine 3 and is based on the novel of the same name. Here’s the interesting part, Ender’s Game is written by Orson Scott Card and has been lauded with numerous awards since it was first published back in 1985. The novel is set in a future where Earth has been invaded by an alien insectoid race called ‘buggers’. It then gets into a whole ‘gifted kids whisked off to Battle School in preparation for a third invasion’ kind of deal.

Sounds fairly science-fiction other than ‘buggers’ being used to describe the alien race doesn’t it, well here’s the thing Orson Scott Card has some very strong views about homosexuality:

“Laws against homosexual behavior should remain on the books, not to be indiscriminately enforced against anyone who happens to be caught violating them, but to be used when necessary to send a clear message that those who flagrantly violate society’s regulation of sexual behavior cannot be permitted to remain as acceptable, equal citizens within that society”

Halo 3 - The Bette Porter of Live games

Yes Halo 3 is back on top of the Xbox Live activity listing after being flung off by Activision’s Call of Duty 4 for a short period of time (Call of Duty 4 being like the Henry of gaming.. you know what we’re saying don’t you L Word fans). Halo 3 is like some power dyke that can’t bear to be underneath anything else.

What Halo 3 players really need is a Jodie to come along and shake things up a little, take Bette by the hands and say “No Bette no, I am in control now and there’s not a damn thing you can do about it”. Seriously, when will Halo’s choke hold over Live end, don’t people get bored of doing the same thing over and over… maybe everyone is ‘gaming monogamous’ and Halo is their bitch… ya think? Yeah we know, we way prefer TiBette to JoBette, so who can blame these Halo 3 lovers really.

Cooper Lawrence is the devil

Who is Cooper Lawrence and why is she the devil? Well, if you haven’t heard about the Mass Effect fiasco with Cooper at its center, here it is in a nutshell: Fox News had Cooper Lawrence on as their psychology ‘expert’ as they lambasted Mass Effect for its “full digital nudity” and that it sees “women as these objects of desire”.

Cooper Lawrence has a background in developmental psychology and had never even seen the game in question, she was allegedly working from (mis)information she was given prior to going on the air. So here’s the thing, since then Cooper Lawrence has essentially been made the scapegoat for shoddy news on Fox. Sure she said some dumb-ass things, but give us a break, she was a dopey guest “expert” ringed in by Fox to lend weight to their ill researched story.

More after the jump.....

Lesbian Geek - For non video gaming geekdom

We love video games, but some of our lesbian sisters love other geekiness. By 'other' we mean anime, science-fiction, tabletop rpg, comic books, graphic novels, manga, gadgets and other grrl geekiness. Though we do like to try and cover some of these things here, we are specifically about video gaming and things directly related to that, so our sister site lesbiangeek was spawned.

Lesbian Geek will be covering different news to us here at Lesbian Gamers, though it will remain true to the Lesbian Gamers style and ethos. So if you're a lesbian and you love geekiness other than our beloved video games, why not check out Lesbian Geek .com.

Halo energy sword replica

This is pretty cool, well if you're like me and for some bizarre reason can't help but stop at that stall in the market that has all the samurai swords, movie replica swords and daggers etc. Someone has put a Halo energy sword on eBay.

Obviously it's not actually made of energy, it's stainless steel, but still very cool. The Halo energy sword is 36 inches in overall length and a whopping 14 inches wide. Sounds pretty hefty, but would no doubt look pretty awesome on any games room wall. The sword is only on eBay for a few more days, so be quick.

Ellen DeGeneres plays Guitar Hero

It was Ellen's 50th birthday this week and on her show she decided to do something she said she loves doing... playing Guitar Hero. She was actually pretty good at it and seemed to be enjoying herself.

We thought it was really cool and of course you don't get a more famous lesbian than Ellen DeGeneres and if she's a gamer as well, then I guess that probably makes her the most famous lesbian gamer out there. That aside, we'd like to say a Happy Birthday to Ellen.. just because we like her.

Lesbian or Gayelle?

I had to check the calendar today to make sure it wasn’t April first. I  spotted a piece on an Aussie news site that said a group of lesbians have launched a worldwide movement to change ‘lesbian’ to ‘gayelle’. Apparently the group think lesbian “is antiquated; it is not representative of modern times, and or, of persons with modern views. Lesbian does not sound cheerful and fun, nor does it mean merry, like the word gay does; rather, it sounds more like loner, loser, and less. Gay females deserve more, not less.”

Each to their own, for me I kind of like lesbian, for numerous reasons and anyway a Google check on ‘gayelle’ showed me it’s a TV station in Trinidad & Tobago, as well as a term used for a cockfighting arena... no irony there I’m sure, or maybe this ‘group’ knows that and thinks it’s somehow indicative of what they’re trying to say? What do you think? Lesbian or gayelle? I know, how about Gaymelle, so we gamers can feel all fluffy and comfortable with the new name as well?

Spandex Force - Be a superhero!

Always fancied yourself as a bit of Superhero? Had aspirations of living a secret life as a funky lesbian crime fighter? Well you’ll be glad to know you now can, thanks to outstanding online PC title ‘Spandex Force’. Yes, we know, no self-respecting lesbian would really wear spandex and we’d tend to leave that to our gay brothers, still if you can get over that aspect of it, you will love Spandex Force. It’s an online game for both Mac and PC that can currently be downloaded as a free demo over on their website. The full game will retail at $19.99 when it’s eventually released in February.

Basically the premise of the game is that you are a superhero in the making, out there trying to stir up some excitement about yourself and gain a bit of a reputation. Like all good superheroes you have a city base where you can monitor your citizens and help those in need. The way you help them in Spandex Force is by playing a series of puzzle games, very similar in fact to legendary Wii / PSP / DS / XBLA title Puzzle Quest.  Each puzzle helps you build up your superhero skills and powers, so that you can become the coolest lesbo superhero since Wonder Woman… umm.. I mean since… well Mystique or Ice Maiden.  Trust me, there’s just nothing quite like swooping in and saving some cute damsel in distress from a falling piano. You can download the demo HERE.

Alone in the Dark 5 - Worth a look

Here’s one for all you survival horror fans. Sadly there’s no lesbian content, don’t even think there’s a cool female sidekick, but this game should get your gaming juices flowing regardless. Alone in the Dark is due out later this year (presently May 08 US and later in the year for EU and AU) and it’s looking really nice.

Alone in the Dark (aka Alone in the Dark 5) is set in New York’s Central Park and will feature a cool episodic TV style format. Apparently the story is split into short episodes (levels) and the end of each will feature a cliffhanger and a teaser for what’s up next, sounds pretty cool.

The following trailer doesn’t show off this episodic format, but it does show off not only some of the graphics, lighting effects and other techno wonder in the title, but also some of the cool things you’ll be able to do in the title with regards to environmental usage. The inventory system also looks really cool with everything seemingly stored in Edward Carnby’s (protagonist) jacket. Give the trailer a view, you’ll probably enjoy it.

Gay Girls Who Game - Epi Four

Not sure where the days are going but it's time for Episode Four of the 'Gay Girls Who Game' vlog on AfterEllen.com. As you all probably know already, AfterEllen is the leading lesbian site on the internet, so we're honored and privileged to have such great support for lesbians who game.

This week we do a little viewer feedback, we also discuss a conservative blogger who took on gamers when he told major porkies about Mass Effect. We look at the best online shooter titles and a little thing called Boogie Bunnies. If you want to support the video blog, you can become a member of AfterEllen (if you're not already!) and leave your comments.

You can check out 'Gay Girls Who Game - Episode Four' <--here.

Lesbians Creed box-art

Yes it’s that time again. We’ve been sent in another doctored box art, this time by ‘The Spike’. She tells us that she’d “love to have a kick-ass chick in the lead role of Assassin’s Creed” adding “after all we do get pegged with the role of predator generally, so why not swing with it lol”.

We thought this was a pretty cool premise and appreciate the time and efforts put in. We also thought The Spike had a pretty good point about the lesbian / predator thing and the fact this box art has another lesbian connection in the form of Christina Cox is also reason to add it to our box-art archives. You can see the ‘Lesbians Creed’ box-art HERE.

Sega Superstar Tennis - Trailer

So who doesn't think this looks like it might be a whole world of fun? Sure there are no lesbians in it (Ulala? Now come on, no self respecting lesbian would dress like that surely?), but Sega Superstar Tennis looks like it's going to be a hoot to play. Many Sega favorites are there including Amigo from Samba de Amigo, Beat from Jet Grind Radio (or Jet Set Radio) and the aforementioned Ulala from Space channel 5. We thought this clip was worth highlighting, so without further ado...
